Launching and configuring a rehydrator instance

This document describes how to launch a rehydrator instance and configure it so you can access and rehydrate your data.


  • To rehydrate your data, you need a Cloud Storage destination bucket. If you don't already have one, see Creating Storage Buckets.

  • A Compute Engine default service account. Verify that the following account is listed in IAM & Admin > Service Accounts:


    If it isn't listed, create it by starting a single Compute Engine virtual machine. After the virtual machine starts successfully, you may stop it if you have no other use for it.

  • If VPC is enabled in your project, ensure that Private Google Access is also enabled for the subnet for the Rehydator VM.

  • If you want to configure optional email alerts so you can receive updates about rehydration jobs, you must use a Gmail account.

  • You must have the username and password of the email account that you want to use as the sender of email alerts.

Launching the rehydrator instance

  1. To launch the Rehydrator User Interface, go to the Rehydrator page on Cloud Marketplace.

  2. Click Launch. The New Transfer Appliance deployment page appears.

  3. Select the Google Cloud project where you want to deploy the Rehydrator instance. Create the Rehydrator instance in the same project as the destination bucket that receives the rehydrated data. To specify a destination bucket, see Setting the target path or prefix.

  4. For the Deployment name, enter a name to identify the deployment.

  5. For the Zone, select the desired compute zone.

    To improve performance, create the Rehydrator instance in the same zone or multi-zone region as the Cloud Storage destination buckets.

  6. Verify that the following options are selected:

    • Machine type - 16 vCPU, 104 GB memory
    • Rehydrator Version - Default
    • Disk type - Standard Persistent Disk
    • Disk size in GB - 1024
  7. To enable external traffic, select any or all of the following Firewall checkboxes:

    • Allow HTTP traffic
    • Allow HTTPS traffic
    • Allow RDP traffic
  8. Click More to display External IP and IP forwarding options.

  9. To deploy a Rehydrator instance that only uses a private IP, select None from the External IP drop-down, and ensure that VPC is configured for the selected subnet.

  10. Click Deploy.

    The deployment tracking page appears, in which you can track the progress of the Rehydrator deployment. Once the deployment process completes, the post-deployment information page appears. This page displays information about the deployment and provides links for accessing and managing the Rehydrator instance.

  11. Make a note of the values for Site address, Rehydrator Username, and Rehydrator Password. You need this information to sign in to the Rehydrator User Interface.

Configuring the rehydrator instance

To configure the Transfer Appliance Rehydrator User Interface so you can access and rehydrate your data, do the following:

  1. To access the Transfer Appliance Rehydrator User Interface, open a browser and enter the URL that was provided as the Site address value when you deployed the instance.

  2. The first time you connect to the Rehydrator a security warning is displayed, asking whether you trust the site. Click Advanced, then proceed to the site.

  3. Sign in using the Rehydrator Username and Rehydrator Password credentials you noted when you deployed the instance.

    The appliance list is displayed.

  4. Select the Transfer Appliance whose data you want to rehydrate from the list.

  5. In Destination Bucket Name, enter the name of the destination bucket for the rehydrated data.

  6. Enter your the encryption credentials that you set when you received Transfer Appliance.

  7. Click Submit. When the Rehydrator instance completes configuration, it displays a dashboard of pending rehydration jobs based on the data in your staging location.

  8. The first time you sign in, you are asked whether you want to take the optional tour of the user interface. Click OK to take the tour, otherwise click Cancel.

Configuring email alerts

You can optionally configure email alerts. Email alerts are sent for significant events regarding rehydration job status.

To configure email alerts, do the following:

  1. Open the Transfer Appliance Rehydrator User Interface.
  2. Click the Settings icon and click Email Notification.
  3. For the Sender Email Address, enter a valid Gmail account to be used as the sender of all notifications.
  4. For the Sender Email Password, enter your Gmail account password.
  5. For the SMTP Server, enter
  6. For the Port, enter 465.
  7. For the Connection, select TLS.
  8. For the Recipient(s), enter a comma-delimited list of email addresses to send notifications to.
  9. Click Save.
