Determining your network type
Google Transfer Appliance TA480 has the following types of network ports:
- Four copper network interface card (NIC) Ethernet ports, capable of 1Gbps or 10Gbps per port.
- Four 10Gbps fiber optic NIC ports.
Google Transfer Appliance TA100 has the following types of network ports:
- Four copper network interface card (NIC) Ethernet ports, capable of 1Gbps or 10Gbps per port.
- Two 10Gbps fiber optic NIC ports.
Port aggregation is also supported for each type of port. For example, the copper Ethernet ports may be configured to work as a single link aggregate, or the four fiber optic ports may be configured as a bond.
Work with your network administrators to determine how to connect each Transfer Appliance to your network. You can connect each using one of the following methods:
- Single Ethernet connection (1Gbps or 10Gbps, depending on the switch).
- Aggregate of up to four 1Gbps or 10Gbps copper NIC (Ethernet) ports with an appropriately configured switch.
- Single 10Gbps fiber optic connection.
- Aggregate of up to four 10Gbps fiber optic ports with an appropriately configured switch.
Determining IP address configuration method
When Transfer Appliance starts up, it attempts to obtain an IP address via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). This IP address, which is used for administration and running capture jobs, should remain the same throughout the data capture. To ensure that Transfer Appliance uses the same IP address during data capture, do one of the following:
Configure a DHCP reservation or persistent binding. Work with your network administration team to accomplish this.
Before proceeding with the appliance setup procedure, determine which IP address configuration method you'll be using.
Acquiring the necessary hardware
Acquire the following hardware to use with Transfer Appliance:
- A VGA monitor with a VGA connector (to connect directly to the Transfer Appliance and access its console).
- A USB keyboard.
Ethernet or fiber optic network cables, depending on how you connect the Transfer Appliance to your network.
If possible, use multiple network cables. The software provides automatic link aggregation (also known as bonding) of ports of equivalent speeds if more than one cable is plugged in. This causes multiple physical network connections to be viewed and handled as one logical connection with aggregated throughput speed. For more information, see Setting up link aggregation.
A workstation with a recent version of Chrome to access the Transfer Appliance Web User Interface once the appliance is set up. If this workstation has sufficient resources, you can use it to perform data capture in addition to appliance configuration and monitoring. If not, you can set up a separate workstation to perform data capture with, or perform appliance capture instead.
Checking maximum transmission unit settings
Transfer Appliance uses a default maximum transmission unit (MTU) of 1500 bytes. Work with your network administration team to make sure the network to which you plan to attach Transfer Appliance supports MTUs of this size. Jumbo frames, or Ethernet frames with more than 1500 bytes of payload, are not supported by Transfer Appliance.
The default MTU is not configurable on the Transfer Appliance, so you will need to work with your network administration team to make changes on your networking equipment if necessary.
Determining SMTP server information
If you want to configure optional email alerts so you can receive updates about data capture jobs, ask your system administrator for the following information:
- The address of your SMTP server, for example, smtp.gmail.com.
- The port to use for SMTP.
- The security mechanism (SSL, TLS, or none) to use for SMTP traffic.
- The email address and password for sending email using your SMTP server.
Setting up Transfer Appliance
Use the following procedure to unpack and power on Transfer Appliance, and then connect it to your network.
Open your shipment documentation located in the shipping label sleeve and read the Packing Checklist.
Confirm that the green seals have the same serial numbers as listed in this checklist. For the TA480 model, the green seals are located on the shipping crate and the ruggedized case inside the crate. For the TA100 model, the green seals are located on the ruggedized case.
If you receive the rack-mount TA100 version of Transfer Appliance, unpack it from its case and use the included rails to install it in your rack. If you receive the TA480, open both ends of the case. Before data capture, open or remove both doors of the TA480 case to allow for adequate ventilation, and to allow Transfer Appliance to connect to power and network. Keep the TA480 doors open during data capture.
Connect the power cords to the power supply plugs on the back of Transfer Appliance and then to 110V power outlets.
- Connect the monitor to the VGA port.
- Connect the keyboard to a USB port using a USB cable.
Connect the network cables to Transfer Appliance. Depending on the type of network you are using:
- Connect the necessary number of Ethernet cables to the copper NIC (Ethernet) ports. The Ethernet ports operate at either 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps depending on the switch to which they are attached.
- For a 10 Gbps fiber network, connect each 10 Gbps fiber cable to the SFP+ connectors.
Plug the network cables into your network ports. Work with your network administration team to to ensure you are connecting Transfer Appliance to the correct network ports.
- Power on Transfer Appliance. On the monitor attached to the appliance, you will see the Transfer Appliance Console User Interface. This console shows startup messages followed by network connectivity details.
Transfer Appliance attempts to acquire an IP address through DHCP during startup and displays this IP address as a URL (like https://184.108.40.206) if it is successful.
If Transfer Appliance is successful in acquiring an IP address via DHCP and your network administration team has created a DHCP reservation for it, note the URL, press the space bar to select OK, and press Return. Proceed to Configuring Transfer Appliance.
If Transfer Appliance cannot acquire an IP address via DHCP, or if you need to configure its IP address statically, follow these directions to manually configure its network settings. Work with your network administration team to get the necessary configuration details. After you have configured the IP address manually, proceed to Configuring Transfer Appliance.
Configuring Transfer Appliance
Use the following procedure to connect to Transfer Appliance from a workstation and specify encryption credentials.
- On a workstation, use Chrome to connect to Transfer Appliance by entering its URL (for example, https://220.127.116.11).
- Transfer Appliance uses a self-signed certificate. The first time you connect to it, you will receive a security warning, asking if you trust the site. Click Advanced, then proceed to the site.
- On the login page, enter the capture user account and password provided to you by Google and then click Sign In.
On the Encryption Settings page, enter a password and passphrase to use to encrypt your data, then click Submit.
The password must meet the following conditions:
- Contains 8 to 32 characters.
- Contains at least 2 uppercase characters, 3 lowercase characters, 2 numerals (0-9) and 1 special character.
- Doesn't contain spaces, single quotes ('), or double quotes (").
The passphrase must meet the following conditions:
- Contains 8 to 64 characters.
- Doesn't contain preceding or trailing spaces, single quotes ('), or double quotes (").
On the Encryption Settings Confirmation dialog, click the checkbox to confirm that you understand that the encryption credentials can't be retrieved and that you have recorded them in a secure location, then click OK.
- The first time you sign in, you are asked if you want to take an optional tour of the user interface. Click OK to take the tour if desired.
- Email Transfer Appliance support to inform Google that you received and configured the Transfer Appliance.
Configuring email alerts
You can optionally configure email alerts. Email alerts are sent for the following events:
- Capture job status changes.
- Storage usage alerts. These are generated when Transfer Appliance storage capacity reaches 95%, 97%, and 99% full.
Use the following procedure to configure optional email alerts.
- Open the Transfer Appliance Web User Interface.
- Click the Settings icon and select Email Notification.
- Enter the following SMTP connection information:
- For SMTP Server, enter your SMTP server address.
- For Port, enter the TCP port your SMTP server uses.
- For Connection, choose the appropriate security mechanism (SSL, TLS, or None).
- Supply the User Name and Password for connecting to your SMTP server.
- For Sender Email Address, enter an email account to be used as the sender of all notifications.
- For Recipient(s), enter a comma-delimited list of email addresses to send notifications to.
- Click Save.
Setting up link aggregation
To increase data transfer throughput to Transfer Appliance, consider using link aggregation, or network bonding. This lets you use multiple network connections in parallel to increase throughput. Link aggregation also provides redundancy if one of the network interfaces fails.
This section refers to the Transfer Appliance Console User Interface (CUI), which comprises the keyboard and monitor attached to the appliance.
Setting up link aggregation before powering on Transfer Appliance
It is recommended that you set up link aggregation on Transfer Appliance before you power on the appliance for the first time. This reduces the number of times you must perform network connectivity tests. If you already started up Transfer Appliance, see Setting up link aggregation after powering on.
Connect multiple network cables with the same speed and type, for example 1 GbE or 10 GbE (copper or fiber), to Transfer Appliance.
Link aggregation does not work with mixed types of connections. For example, Transfer Appliance can't aggregate a combination of 1GbE and 10GbE connections. Transfer Appliance defaults to the fastest available connection. whether aggregated or not. For example, if you try to aggregate 4 1GbE connections and there is a single 10GbE link connected, Transfer Appliance defaults to the 10GbE connection because it provides the fastest throughput speeds.
Power on Transfer Appliance.
After Transfer Appliance initializes, the software automatically creates the link aggregation, obtains an IP address using DHCP, and assigns it to the aggregated network.
Set up the appliance keyboard and monitor. For instructions, see Setting up Transfer Appliance.
From the Transfer Appliance Console User Interface, confirm:
- The NICs used to create an aggregated link.
- The network speed of the aggregated link.
- For both DHCP and static IP addresses, the same IP addresses are used by all four NICs.
Setting up link aggregation after powering on Transfer Appliance
You can enable link aggregation after powering up Transfer Appliance, or change existing link aggregations by adding network cables to or removing network cables from the appliance.
After Transfer Appliance initializes, the software automatically creates the link aggregation, obtains an IP address using DHCP, and assigns it to the aggregated network. If you're configuring Transfer Appliance for static IP address and link aggregation, set the same IP address for all of the ports connected to the switch. If you add or remove network cables from the appliance, follow the instructions in this section.
Configuring link aggregation
- From the Transfer Appliance Console User Interface, select Configure Network.
- Press Enter. The user interface displays configuration options.
- Add or remove network cables attached to Transfer Appliance.
- To redetect connected network cables, select Redetect Network Connectivity.
- Press Enter. The user interface displays all network cables connected, as well as their speeds.
- Click OK.
- Press Enter. Now you are ready to set up a static IP or dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) IP address.
