Is the Transfer Appliance available in my country?
Transfer Appliance is currently only available in the United States. Provide the details of where your data is physically located when filling out the Transfer Appliance application form.
I just filled out the form to request a Transfer Appliance. When can I expect to receive one?
We will respond within 2-3 business days of receiving your request with an acknowledgement or follow-up questions.
I need to move less than 20 TB of data. What are my data migration options?
How fast can my data be migrated to Google Cloud Platform?

The Transfer Appliance data migration process consists of the following steps:

  1. Data capture.
  2. Data upload.
  3. Rehydration, including reduplication, decompression, and decryption.

The data capture stage takes the longest amount of time, often due to the time required to set up and configure the appliance. Common bottlenecks for the data capture stage can also include the use of slower networks (1Gbps or less) and low performance storage servers.

You can reduce the time needed for the data migration process by talking to your Google Customer Engineer and putting together a strategy prior to requesting a Transfer Appliance.

What if I have more than 500 terabytes (TB) of data to transfer?
Multiple Transfer Appliances are sent to you to accommodate your data transfer needs.
Can I use Transfer Appliance at multiple sites in my organization?
Yes. If you choose to do this, you are responsible for shipping Transfer Appliance between sites. Refer to the Transfer Appliance Service Specific Terms.
How secure is my data during the data migration process?
Your data is secured with industry standard AES256 encryption. You control the encryption keys, and they are not stored on Transfer Appliance when it is in transit.
Is Transfer Appliance HIPAA compliant?
Yes.
What happens if I receive Transfer Appliance but decide not to proceed with data migration?
You can cancel the data migration process at any time and ship the Transfer Appliance back to Google. You are still billed for the Transfer Appliance. Any data that you have already captured to the Transfer Appliance is securely wiped at the earliest opportunity.
Can I use Windows and Linux workstations with one Transfer Appliance?
Yes. You can simultaneously run any combination of Windows, Linux, and/or NFS captures on the Transfer Appliance.
I forgot my passphrase or password. Can I recover it?

No. If you forget your passphrase or password, reset it by following these instructions:

  1. Perform a factory reset to wipe any data you captured.
    Transfer Appliance prompts you to create a new password and passphrase.
  2. Enter the new password and passphrase.
  3. Record the new password and passphrase for future reference.
  4. Check that Transfer Appliance recognizes the new password and passphrase by power cycling the Transfer Appliance and entering the new password/passphrase when prompted.
  5. Restart the data capture using the new password and passphrase.
Does link aggregation need switch support?
No. Transfer Appliance uses Linux network interface card bonding modes, for example balance-alb or 6, for link aggregation. For more information, see Linux Ethernet Bonding Driver How To.
No. Link aggregation requires the use of links with the same speed and type. For example, Transfer Appliance will not accept a combination of copper and fibre optic cables.
I enabled link aggregation on Transfer Appliance and started the data transfer. After I started the transfer, one of the network cables became unplugged. What will happen to the data transfer if I plug the cable back into Transfer Appliance?
If a network connection becomes detached from Transfer Appliance after you enable link aggregation and start the data transfer, Transfer Appliance continues to capture data. However, data transfer speeds might decrease. If you reconnect the network cable during the data transfer, Transfer Appliance automatically re-adds that cable to the link aggregation.
How can I connect Transfer Appliance to the network for maximum bandwidth?
To achieve maximum bandwidth, attach as many high speed network ports on the appliance as possible to the local network. Transfer Appliance detects connectivity and aggregates ports for maximum bandwidth. For more information, see Setting up Link Aggregation.
How does Transfer Appliance aggregate network ports?
Transfer Appliance combines connected ports of similar speed. For more information, see Setting up Link Aggregation.
How does Transfer Appliance choose which connections to use?
After link aggregation, Transfer Appliance picks a single connection with the highest bandwidth. For more information, see Setting up Link Aggregation.
How does Transfer Appliance assign an IP address to the connection it chooses?
When Transfer Appliance starts up, it attempts to obtain an IP address via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). This IP address, which is used for administration and running capture jobs, should remain the same throughout the data capture. To ensure that Transfer Appliance uses the same IP address during data capture, do one of the following:
