Stackdriver Monitoring in the Cloud Console

Stackdriver Monitoring in the Cloud Console is in beta release. Your configuration information, such as uptime checks and alerting policies, is accessible, and changeable, from the Cloud Console and from the classic Stackdriver Monitoring console.

To get started with Monitoring, do the following:

  1. Go to the Cloud Console:

    Go to Cloud Console

  2. Select an existing project or create a project.

  3. In the navigation panel, select Monitoring.

How do I recognize the beta offer?

Users are randomly offered the choice to try the beta or to continue using the classic Stackdriver Monitoring console. If you've been selected, then banners inviting you to try the beta are displayed when you go to Stackdriver Monitoring:

  • If your Google Cloud project is associated with a Workspace and you click Monitoring, then the Stackdriver Monitoring console Overview page displays a banner similar to the following:

Display of the new workspace beta opt-in banner and button.

To use the beta, click Try beta.

  • If your Google Cloud project isn't associated with a Workspace and you click Monitoring, then after your Workspace is created, a banner similar to the following is displayed:

Display of the new workspace beta opt-in banner and button.

    • To use the beta, click Try beta.
    • To use the classic console, click No thanks!.

After you choose your console, when you access Monitoring URLs, they are redirected, if necessary, to the console you selected. For example, suppose you have a bookmark that links to Metrics Explorer in the classic Stackdriver Monitoring console. If you click the bookmark, then you are redirected to Metrics Explorer in the Cloud Console if you have chosen to use the beta.

To view or change your selection, go to the Settings page and click Beta status. This page displays your current console and an option to switch consoles.

Your choice of console applies only to your current Workspace.

About the beta

The Stackdriver Monitoring console, at the URL https://apps.google.stackdriver.com, was developed to let you observe the behavior of your system by providing tools to view metrics about your system and to notify you when something goes wrong. This console and all of its functionality is being migrated to the Google Cloud Console.

The beta lets you observe the behavior of your system in the Cloud Console at the URL https://console.cloud.google.com/.

During the beta, both consoles are available.

Console differences

If you choose to try the beta, you'll notice some differences:

  • In the Cloud Console, if you scroll to Monitoring, a menu of options is provided instead of a single option:

Menu includes Monitoring overview, Metrics Explorer,
Alerting, Uptime checks,Dashboards,Groups, Settings, and Stackdriver console.

  • Functionality that was accessible through the Resources menu in the Stackdriver Monitoring console has been moved:

    • Metrics Explorer is accessible from the Cloud Console navigation pane.

    • Predefined dashboards are available in the Dashboards window.

    • The Key Visualizer for Bigtable is accessible from the Dashboards window.

  • The Workspace settings content has been moved to Settings, which is available from the Cloud Console navigation pane.

  • The alerting, dashboards, groups, and uptime checks windows display a list of the respective content. To view a specific entry in detail, you click the entry name. You can sort the list, filter the list, and mark items as a favorite.

  • The Workspace creation and association with a Google Cloud project has been simplified. After you create a Google Cloud project, you can access any Monitoring functionality. If your project isn't associated with a Workspace, a Workspace is created and associated with your project.

  • You can control which charts are displayed the Monitoring overview window. By default, charts are selected based on the resources in your Google Cloud project. However, you can add additional charts, and you can remove any existing charts.

Beta restrictions

Some functionality in the Stackdriver Monitoring console isn't yet available in the Cloud Console:

  • Key Visualizer for Cloud Bigtable: To access this tool when you you have opted to use the beta, go to Dashboards and click Cloud Bigtable key visualizer. You are redirected to the Stackdriver Monitoring console.

  • Key Visualizer for Datastore: To access this tool, you must use the classic Stackdriver Monitoring console. This tool isn't accessible from the beta.

  • Public charts page: To access the page of public charts, use the Stackdriver Monitoring console and select Dashboards > Public charts page.

  • Manual event creation: To create an event manually, use the Stackdriver Monitoring console and select *Alerting > Events > Create Event.

  • Slack configuration: If you create a Slack configuration, that process transitions you to the Stackdriver Monitoring console. For more information, see Configuring notification channels.

  • Management of all Workspaces: The Stackdriver Monitoring console provides a page to view, and manage all of your Workspaces. This page is not available in the beta.

Documentation

Stackdriver Monitoring documentation pages that previously described how to use the Stackdriver Monitoring console have been updated to describe how to use both consoles. These pages contain a note at the top of the page and two main headers:

  • Using the Google Cloud Console

Content specific to using Stackdriver Monitoring in the Cloud Console.

  • Using the Stackdriver Monitoring

Content specific to using Stackdriver Monitoring in the Stackdriver Monitoring console.

When documentation for other products, such as BigQuery, describes how to create an alerting policy or a custom dashboard, those descriptions are for the Stackdriver Monitoring console, not the beta.
