Setting Up and Configuring Google Transfer Appliance

You will receive one or more Transfer Appliances, depending on the volume of data you need to move. Use the following procedure to set up and configure each Transfer Appliance.

Prerequisites

Complete the following prerequisites before setting up and configuring Transfer Appliance.

Determine your network type

Talk with your network administrator to determine which of the following network types is in use at your location. You will need to know this to acquire the correct kind of network cables, and also to complete the following Set up Transfer Appliance procedure.

  • 1 Gbps network
  • 10 Gbps copper network
  • 10 Gbps fiber network

Determine if you have persistent DHCP bindings

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) provides a mechanism for allocating IP addresses to servers. Depending on how DHCP is configured on your network, IP address binding can be persistent or dynamic. If it is persistent, the same IP address is always assigned to the same server, regardless of server reboots and similar issues. If it is dynamic, a server's IP address can change following a reboot or DHCP lease expiration. Talk with your network administrator to determine if your network uses persistent DHCP bindings or not. You will need to know this to complete the following Set up Transfer Appliance procedure.

Acquire the necessary hardware

Acquire the following hardware to use with Transfer Appliance:

  • A VGA monitor with a VGA connector (to connect directly to the Transfer Appliance and access the console).
  • A USB 2.0 keyboard.
  • A USB 2.0 mouse.
  • One or more Ethernet or fiber optic network cables (10 Gbps recommended), depending on your network type.

    We recommend using multiple network cables if possible. The software provides automatic link aggregation (also known as bonding) of ports of equivalent speeds if more than one cable is plugged in. This causes multiple physical network connections to be viewed and handled as one logical connection with aggregated throughput speed.

  • A workstation with a recent version of Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer to access the Transfer Appliance web interface once Transfer Appliance is set up. If this workstation has sufficient resources, you can use it to perform data capture in addition to Transfer Appliance configuration and monitoring. If not, you can set up a separate workstation to perform data capture with, or perform appliance capture instead.

Determine SMTP server information

If you want to configure optional email alerts so you can receive updates about data capture jobs, ask your system administrator for the following information:

  • The address of your SMTP server (like smtp.gmail.com).
  • The port to use for SMTP.
  • The security mechanism (SSL, TLS, or none) to use for SMTP traffic.

You also need to know the user name and password of the email account that you want to use as the sender of email alerts.

Set up Transfer Appliance

Use the following procedure to unpack and power on Transfer Appliance, and then connect it to your network.

  1. If you have received the rack-mount version of Transfer Appliance, unpack it from its case and use the included rails to install it in your rack. If you have received the self-contained version, simply open both ends of the case, remove Transfer Appliance, and set it on a flat surface.

    Make sure to keep the packing materials that Transfer Appliance arrives in, as you will need these to repackage Transfer Appliance and ship it back when you are finished capturing data.

  2. Connect the power cords to the power supply plugs on the back of Transfer Appliance and then to 110V power outlets.

  3. Connect the monitor to the VGA port.
  4. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the USB ports using USB connector cables.
  5. Connect the network cables to Transfer Appliance in one of the following ways:

    • For a 1 Gbps network, connect each 1 Gbps ethernet cable to one of the copper NICs on Transfer Appliance.
    • For a 10 Gbps copper network, connect each 10 Gbps copper cable to one of the copper NICs on Transfer Appliance.
    • For a 10 Gbps fiber network, connect each included SFP+ connector to one of the fiber NICs on Transfer Appliance, and then attach each 10 Gbps fiber cable to one of the connectors.
  6. Plug the network cables into your network ports. Make sure you have read Preparing for Data Transfer to ensure you are connecting Transfer Appliance to the right subnet and have taken any other steps needed to make network traffic to the appliance possible.

  7. Power on Transfer Appliance. On the monitor attached to Transfer Appliance, you can see the Transfer Appliance console. You see several startup messages and then autodiscovered information about network connectivity.
  8. Transfer Appliance attempts to acquire an IP address through DHCP during startup and displays this IP address as a URL (like https://123.456.78.90) if it is successful.

    If Transfer Appliance is successful in acquiring an IP address and your network uses persistent DHCP binding, note the URL, press the space bar to select OK, and press Return. You can now proceed to Configure Transfer Appliance.

    If Transfer Appliance is unsuccessful in acquiring an IP address, or if your network doesn't use persistent DHCP binding, follow the instructions at Setting the IP Address for Transfer Appliance to set an IP address for Transfer Appliance before proceeding.

Configure Transfer Appliance

Use the following procedure to connect to Transfer Appliance from a workstation and specify encryption credentials.

  1. On a workstation, use a supported browser to connect to Transfer Appliance. Use the Transfer Appliance URL, for example https://123.456.78.90.
  2. The first time you connect to Transfer Appliance, you might receive a security error from your browser about the Transfer Appliance certificate. Use the appropriate procedure for your browser as described in Handle browser certificate errors to dismiss the error and connect to Transfer Appliance.
  3. On the login page, type the capture user account and password provided to you by Google and then choose Sign In.
  4. On the Encryption Settings page, specify the password and passphrase to use to encrypt your data, then choose Submit.

    The password must meet following conditions:

    • Contains 8 to 32 characters.
    • Contains at least 2 uppercase characters, 3 lowercase characters, 2 numerals (0-9) and 1 special character.
    • Doesn't contain spaces, single quotes ('), or double quotes (").

    The passphrase must meet following conditions:

    • Contains 8 to 64 characters.
    • Doesn't contain spaces, single quotes ('), or double quotes (").

  5. On the Encryption Settings Confirmation dialog, check the checkbox to confirm that you understand that the encryption credentials can't be reset and that you have recorded them in a secure location, then choose OK.

  6. The first time you log in, you are asked if you want to take the optional tour of the user interface. Choose OK, otherwise choose Cancel.
  7. Email data-support@google.com to signal receipt and configuration of Transfer Appliance.

Handle browser certificate errors

Use the appropriate procedure for your browser to dismiss certificate errors:

Chrome

If you receive a Your connection is not private warning when connecting, take the following steps:

  1. Click Advanced.
  2. Click Proceed to [Transfer Appliance IP address] (unsafe).

Firefox

If you receive a Your connection is not secure warning when connecting, take the following steps:

  1. Click Advanced.
  2. Click Add Exception.
  3. For Location, type the Transfer Appliance URL.
  4. Click Confirm Security Exception.

Internet Explorer

If you receive a There is a problem with this website's security certificate warning when connecting, click Continue to this website (not recommended).

Configure email alerts

You can optionally configure email alerts. Email alerts are sent for the following events:

  • Capture job status.
  • Storage usage alerts. These are generated when Transfer Appliance storage capacity reaches 95%, 97%, and 99% full.

Use the following procedure to configure optional email alerts.

  1. On a workstation, connect to the Transfer Appliance web interface.
  2. Click the settings icon in the upper right corner of the page and choose Email Notification.
  3. For Sender Email Address, specify a valid Gmail account to be used as the sender of all notifications.
  4. For Password, type the password for the sender email account.
  5. For SMTP Server, type the SMTP server address as provided by your system administrator per Determine SMTP server information.
  6. For Port, type the SMTP port as provided by your system administrator per Determine SMTP server information.
  7. For Connection, choose the SMTP security mechanism (SSL, TLS, or None) as indicated by your system administrator per Determine SMTP server information.
  8. For Recipient(s), specify a comma-delimited list of email addresses to send notifications to.
  9. Click Save.
