St. Benedict Technology Consortium (SBTC) provides nonprofits in the Chicago area with IT and data management services, allowing them to avoid spending time on infrastructure management and focus on advancing their missions. As a nonprofit itself, SBTC is laser focused on efficiencies and wanted to improve its approach toward storage, emphasizing lower operating costs and improved data reliability.

Enabling Change

Solutions: Backup, Archival, and Disaster Recovery
Pillars: Infrastructure Modernization

When SBTC previously developed storage solutions for clients, local hardware was often the organization's preferred approach. As a nonprofit working with other nonprofits, SBTC staff members have firsthand knowledge of the challenges its clients face, including limited funds, which can make deploying and managing best-in-class IT systems difficult. At SBTC, reliance on on-premises hardware limited backup options for SBTC clients and left data at risk if systems failed or an event damaged the organization's offices.

The seamless migration to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) revamps how SBTC approaches storage and data reliability, as Cloud Storage Coldline class perfectly fits the data backup and archiving needs of SBTC nonprofits. This helped better protect clients with no downtime or additional operational costs during the transition. Unlike commercial businesses, nonprofits do not typically produce large amounts of data on a daily or monthly basis, but still need a way to store and access these files for service, legal, or research needs. Nearline and Coldline Google Cloud Storage offer cost-effective storage scalability and long-term archiving.

In addition, GCP boosts data security by providing an offsite backup location for SBTC clients in case of local storage damage. GCP virtual servers can be used during the restoration process, saving time and bypassing legacy steps such as having to set up physical servers. Intuitive GCP deployment management that minimized disruption during the migration process was also an important consideration as SBTC looked to transition to Google Cloud.

Google Cloud Premier Partner CloudBerry Lab was a major contributor throughout the SBTC deployment process, as the organization uses CloudBerry Backup to automate backup management. The nonprofit has already seen a 33 percent decrease in product support times across multiple clients alongside cost reductions for backups. CloudBerry Managed Backup features, including Speedvault support, contributed to the efficiency gains, as they allow SBTC to quickly leverage existing client IT infrastructure without needing extensive rebuilds or hardware investments.

"CloudBerry Lab offers the right mix of affordability, ease of use, and features," says Scott Bell, Director at SBTC. "We have clients who don't have a lot of resources to deploy projects, but CloudBerry Managed Backup allows us to only need licensing, driving quick adaptation to different backend setups and faster deployments."

Amid client growth, SBTC is confident that GCP can meet its IT and organizational goals, including eliminating data failures for nonprofits as they look to provide quality, uninterrupted services. With GCP, SBTC has a platform that can scale to meet the IT infrastructure needs of individual nonprofits so they can continue to serve as many clients as possible, while making limited funds go further.

"Nonprofits need to stay focused on their important missions and our goal is to improve their success through technology," says Scott. "GCP enables us to work with fellow nonprofits to achieve our goal and help others serve people in need throughout the Chicago area."

"Google Cloud Platform has an established presence in the cloud space. We trust Google Cloud and our customers also trust Google Cloud. With Google Cloud, we help our clients keep their budgets invested in their mission, not in maintaining IT systems."
