In the city of Coari, 444 kilometers away from Manaus (Amazonas), a small hospital offers diagnosis by specialist doctors from the largest cities, like São Paulo. Providing health care services to these patients is achieved through a partnership between the hospital and Portal Telemedicina, a startup that applies Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and machine learning technologies by Google to bring quick and accurate remote diagnosis to life. Portal Telemedicina is a Brazilian startup founded in 2014 that offers an online platform through which small or remote hospitals in the country send test results to specialists, who will assess them and return a diagnosis online. The company has taken part in two editions of the Google's acceleration program, Launchpad Accelerator and Launchpad Studio, which has helped the company to improve its technology and drive business.

The startup resorts to Google Cloud's application programming interfaces (APIs) to encrypt patients' information and store it in the cloud. Moreover, it has adopted ML Engine to train its algorithms for detecting diseases based on test results, which allows the system to sort the diagnosis queue on an emergency-based priority. This way, specialists can identify which cases are most urgent, in order to prioritize health care.

According to Rafael Figueroa, co-founder and CEO of Portal Telemedicina, this technology accelerates the diagnosis process. So, medical reports that took days to be received can be delivered within only a few minutes by some of the best specialists in the country. Using Google Cloud has also helped the startup to significantly reduce the value of services for the hospital. "We are growing and operating at large scale thanks to Google Cloud. Today, we generate around 3 thousand reports daily, with a team of 30 doctors. Apart from Brazil we also provide services to Angola, in Africa, and we are planning to expand our reach to the US and Europe," says Figueroa.

According to Ricardo dos Santos Faria, doctor and owner of the Occupational Medicine Center in Coari, a city in the heart of the Amazonas, only the combination of technology and medicine can improve the quality of life and support the right treatment for patients living in remote communities. "Here, we have over 200 villages, and it is only possible to access by plane or boat. The partnership with Portal Telemedicina, as well as technology, have enabled us to set up the hospital and have opened the gates to a whole new world, overcoming the local barriers related to the lack of specialists and infrastructure," says Faria.
