Companies use Pendo to better understand how customers use their applications, and drive engagement with in-app messaging. To power the platform's deep analytics, guidance, and communication features and maintain development flexibility, Pendo needed a backend solution that could provide optimal performance and streamlined IT administration cost-effectively.

Enabling Change

Solutions: Migration

When Pendo was first investigating platform options, ease of use factored strongly into the company's decision-making. Pendo wanted to avoid tasking its developers with setting up all of the necessary operational infrastructure alongside regular feature development. Ideally, its developers could simply produce the code and have it run and scale automatically. It found that solution in Google Cloud. Google Cloud offers flexible management tools and pricing to take care of routine platform administration, allowing Pendo to focus on developing valuable new features for customers.

BigQuery, Cloud Datastore, and Cloud Storage support the Pendo backend, providing storage and processing capabilities that power the platform's app usage insights. Pendo analytics help product managers, UX designers, customer success teams, and growth marketers analyze in-app behavior including individual menu or mouse clicks to improve usability and provide targeted customer support.

App Engine is a central part of the Pendo platform, supporting a majority of the company's compute load. Pendo typically runs thousands of CPUs at any given time and uses the service to deploy code and manage workloads. Developers only need to do an API call to increase its CPU capacity for larger jobs, providing the Pendo platform with valuable scalability. Regular App Engine support from Google also protects the solution from potential risks posed by bugs.

Future Google Cloud plans for Pendo include potential machine learning and Google Kubernetes Engine integrations, along with multi-region expansion.

"What attracted me to Google Cloud was that we wouldn't have to worry about basic management and could focus on bigger platform development. I feel lucky that we could build Pendo with the support of Google."
