Migrating to Google Cloud allowed Navent to face search peaks in the Jobs line.

Since the Internet is the tool most commonly used to conduct certain searches, the companies offering this type of solutions need to improve their technical capacity to support the demand for searches.

This is especially true for companies seeking to expand into several markets, which requires the development of new strategies. This was the challenge faced by Navent, a leading Latin American online job listings company born almost twenty years ago as Bumeran.com, the first online job listings company in Latin America.

The company, based in Argentina, has two business lines: a Jobs listings line and a Real Estate listings line, and is present in Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador and Brazil.

"The company experienced a sudden growth as it purchased other companies (like Zonajobs) and competitors within the industry, and is now in the process of reorganizing and consolidating its technology to drive its growth," notes Alejo Blacker, Grupo Navent's Infrastructure Manager.

As the company expanded throughout the region, its infrastructure did not always adapt at the same rate, especially in the Jobs line, where the company was reaching the limits of its architecture.

"Our traffic rates vary a lot, but there is a peak at noon, especially on Mondays, which almost doubles the traffic recorded on Fridays. Our current infrastructure, made possible by Google Cloud, allows us to meet this demand,"

Diego Amado, Jobs' CTO

The need to improve the infrastructure that supports Navent's services is what lead Navent to Google, whose Google Cloud Platform offered the stability and dynamism the company needed, as well as the scalability required as the business continues to grow.

Pegging Growth to Service Quality

Google's cloud service was the answer to the company's need to grow fast to meet demand and, at the same time, it helped reduce the costs of maintaining the large number of servers and infrastructure equipment required to face Mondays' demand, which previously caused the company to have idle capacity throughout the rest of the week.

"We needed an alternative on the cloud to meet demand fluctuations. We need to grow constantly, and having a partner like Google makes that easier,"

Alejo Blacker, Grupo Navent's Infrastructure Manager

According to Guido Navalesi, Architect of the Jobs line, who was very much involved in the migration process, the adoption of BigQuery, a largely scalable business data storage system, changed everything.

"One of the main changes is the fact that we are now able to make issues affecting platform operation more visible to other teams. For example, the teams working with online marketing and SEO gained access to information that was hard for developers to translate. We now have tables everyone can understand without the help of the development team,"

Diego Amado, Jobs' CTO

Another element that introduced an immediate improvement, and benefited especially users, was the migration of Zonajobs to Google Cloud. Zonajobs is one of the main platforms in the Jobs line, and the site's loading time dropped by 20% as the result of the migration alone, without the need for further optimization.

"We were also able to launch a new mobile app which, despite being a beta version, is much more robust because we were able to conduct more tests. This allowed us to come up with a version that is more complete than the one we would have launched had we not used Google Cloud,"

Diego Amado, Jobs' CTO

Transferring Duties to Focus on Performance

After the migration to Google Cloud Platform, Navent's team realized it could reduce its operational workload to focus on the aspects that make it a unique and successful platform.

Tolls like CloudSQL, simple and fully-managed databases, allowed developers to focus on the performance and optimization of its apps instead of the infrastructure required to run them. The use of Cloud Memorystore significantly reduced Navent's storage and management costs.

"Developers are taking advantage of testing tools. We can now better organize pre-production stages, which allows us to test various developments at the same time and divide the teams so they can work in many projects at the same time," explains Diego Amado, Jobs' CTO.

With this new layout, Navent can focus on more ambitious goals aimed at better balancing customers' supply and demand.

"We want to understand the profile of a person who is looking for a job, beyond what can be read in a résumé, and enrichen the search to create an ideal matching of applicants to the positions offered by the companies," notes Alejo Blacker, Navent's Head of Infrastructure.

The company's team knows that their position as the result of the migration to Google Cloud Platform puts them on a more stable path to innovation and gives them the power to continue developing their plan for constant growth.
