Conductor Technologies wanted to empower visual effects (VFX) and computer graphics (CG) animation studios to reduce costs and access capacity on demand by offloading demanding render workloads to the cloud. Preemptible VMs and Custom Machine Types on Compute Engine provide the company with a cost-effective way to scale render jobs quickly, allowing customers to take on more CG work and complete it faster.

Google Cloud Results

  • Rendered millions of core hours for major studio features including Deadpool, Welcome to Marwen, Star Trek Beyond, and Oscar-winning Bladerunner 2049
  • Helps studios take on more projects and complete them on schedule and often under budget
  • Helps level the playing field between smaller creative studios and their larger competitors

Provides burst capacity of 200K+ cores on its platform

Enabling Change

Solutions: Hybrid Cloud

Until recently, VFX and CG animation studios faced a difficult choice when it came to rendering creations: either try to squeeze the most out of their on-premises compute resources and risk missing opportunities and deadlines, or over-provision their render farm and pay for those resources to often sit idle. Conductor Technologies offers customers a better option with its Conductor Cloud Rendering platform, providing access to hundreds of thousands of Compute Engine cores on a moment's notice. Custom Machine Types and Preemptible VMs optimize cloud resources while reducing costs. BigQuery supports data-driven cost controls to notify customers when they're approaching certain thresholds, helping studios use their budget for a shot without exceeding it.

Conductor Technologies is also working with the Google team to leverage BigQuery ML, which will enable the cloud rendering platform to optimize decision-making on the studios' behalf, such as ideal instance types and cost estimates for a given scene.

"Besides its massive compute scalability, the cost flexibility of Google Cloud aligns perfectly with our company values," says Francois Lebel, Director of Engineering at Conductor Technologies. "Plus, with BigQuery ML, it's been really easy to incorporate cost predictions so our customers have even more control over their cloud rendering jobs."

"A VFX or CG studio might need a multimillion dollar render farm, but they only need it for an hour or two. With Google Cloud Platform, we're giving even small studios the resources they need to contribute cutting-edge effects and animation sequences to some of today's biggest films."
