Aiming to become the leading tourism company in Latin America, Best Day looked for ways to optimize their cloud-based operations and become more efficient. Google Cloud was the best solution.

Google Cloud results

  • In a single year, the company reduced infrastructure costs by approximately 75%
  • Compute Engine has helped the company achieve 9,000 queries per second (QPS)
  • Storage performance for SQL Server databases was enhanced by 30%

From November 2018 to November 2019, the company reduced infrastructure costs by approximately 75%.

Best Day is a Mexican tourism company that aims to be the leading travel agency in Latin America. Best Day always looks to stand out from the competition by engaging in multiple market segments and providing vacationers with the greatest experience possible.

“Our mission is to offer unforgettable trips. We want our travelers to have a smooth, stress-free experience, and our goal is to expand our services to all of Latin America beyond Cancun, Riviera Maya, and the Dominican Republic, where we operate today,” says Nacho Bassino, Chief Technology and Product Officer at Best Day.

Offering highly satisfactory experiences for customers is crucial for Best Day. They want to offer more than merely a plane ticket and a hotel reservation, so their operations need to run like clockwork. The company’s departments need constant updating, while the technical side required a modern upgrade to make operations sustainable.

Tackling challenges through optimization

One of the most important tools at Best Day is the online platform they use to market their services. The company faced three main challenges when trying to increase productivity. First, they had to maintain availability and performance up at a low cost; second, automate as many operations as possible; third, data had to be processed in real time to make better business decisions and enable an AI-powered customized experience.

While searching for the best solution, Best Day came across DataArt, a consulting company that would later become their best ally when implementing Google Cloud.

The migration process took two months and an additional month for groundwork. While staff is still receiving training, the benefits of the new platform immediately became clear.

“After implementing the Google Cloud tools, we immediately noticed benefits in terms of cost, stability, and new capabilities,” says Nacho Bassino.

From November 2018 to November 2019, infrastructure costs were reduced by approximately 75%, in part from structural changes and workflow improvements, while migrating to Google Cloud also contributed to significant cost efficiencies.

At the same time, Best Day was able to solve problems with stability in their cloud-based database environment they experienced with their previous provider. “In fact, we are now able to bear the same ops burden, or even more, with a 30% smaller infrastructure,” adds Facundo Voncina, Software Development Director at Best Day.

Stability during demand peaks was also solved after migrating to Google Cloud. Jumps in online traffic inherent to the tourism industry must be made stable and scalable. Moreover, low latency was achieved given Google’s network of strategically distributed Data Centers.

Tools within Google Cloud have streamlined operations that have a direct impact on Best Day’s customers. For example, Compute Engine has achieved 9,000 queries per second (QPS) and storage performance for SQL Server databases was enhanced by 30%.

Future-proof capabilities

Work teams have expressed their satisfaction after the migration considering they now have more time to do other things.

“Both our infrastructure and workflow used to be three times larger,” says Facundo Voncina. “Now our structure has many automated operations that we didn’t have before, making our workload much lighter.

Process automation also had a positive impact on users’ experience, since cloud-availability issues were reduced, and releases became faster and more frequent.

Best Day is currently using BigQuery to collect all the sales data they need for automatic cost alerts and reports. They expect to migrate their whole data strategy to this tool in the future and also to test AI-powered services to experiment with customization algorithms.

“We’re currently focused on data, and we expect a reduction in our ops burden so that our teams can devote their time to innovation and not on operational tasks."

Nacho Bassino, Chief Technology and Product Officer, Best Day

This is how change and innovation made work more efficient at Best Day which, in turn, made teams feel more productive. All staff members receive ongoing training to improve their ability to take advantage of available solutions such as BigQuery. This tool will allow for a better, more customized experience for customers in the long run, which is a key objective in Best Day’s business strategy.
