Many job seekers struggle with knowing what to search for in order to find the right job opportunities—and this is particularly true for the 250,000 men and women who transition out of the U.S. military every year. The language used to describe military service and civilian employment is not always similar, and many transitioning personnel need a way to translate their experience so they don’t miss out on great opportunities, and businesses don’t miss out on great candidates.

To translate between military and civilian job languages, we worked closely with veterans to map U.S. military occupational specialities to our own occupation ontologies. The result is a new feature in Cloud Talent Solution that allows users to search by U.S. military occupational speciality code (MOS, AFSC, or NEC). Now, when transitioning service members and veterans search for jobs on career sites and job boards powered by Cloud Talent Solution, they can simply input their code and Cloud Talent Solution will automatically return a list of civilian jobs that best align with the skills they gained while serving. Military rank codes are also supported—for example, “11A” for Infantry Officer and “11B” for Infantryman are differentiated.

I’m proud that my fellow veteran Googlers and I had the chance to provide input on these tools to make sure we’re best serving those who so dutifully served our country. Google is committed to creating opportunities for everyone, and with today’s announcement, we hope our technology can help make transitioning to civilian life a little bit easier.

For any enterprise company, job board, or staffing agency already using Cloud Talent Solution, this feature is live on your site right now. Transitioning service personnel can enter their U.S. military occupational specialty code (MOS, AFSC, or NEC) into your job search bar today and get results. We are enabling companies like FedEx to offer this experience on their jobs site, careers.fedex.com/military, as well as Encompass Health and Siemens, through our talent technology partner Jibe. We’re also powering veterans job sites like Getting Hired and other job boards like CareerBuilder

“As a company with 2,500 military veterans in our ranks, Siemens knows that veterans have strong technical training and natural leadership skills that add tremendous value to our business. But to fully support veterans entering the civilian workforce, employers need to meet them where they are,” said Barbara Humpton, CEO, Siemens USA. “That’s why Siemens is thrilled to be an early adopter of the Google Cloud Talent Solution feature, which will make matching veterans’ skills to our open positions easier than ever before.”

We’ve also begun to implement this on our own Google career site. Search “42B”, the Army code for Human Resources Officer, or “3s0x1”, the Air Force code for Personnel Specialist, and you’ll see the jobs at Google that align most closely to those particular military roles.

Today’s announcement is just one part of our continuing work to help our nation’s military service members transition to civilian jobs. If you are an employer, job board, or staffing agency looking to help more transitioning military personnel find the right job opportunities on your site, learn more about Cloud Talent Solution or contact us to get started.
